WHAT

Canadian glass artist Fern Jordan has long been captivated by the qualities of light and intense, rich colour. Although she has used many different media—painting, weaving, quiltmaking, needlework, knitting—nothing has excited or inspired her as much as the art of creating with stained glass. Alive and vibrant, with its thousands of colours and textures, glass is a wondrous medium for the exploration and enhancement of light.

Statement

In addition to is-ko-te, a line of dichroic glass jewellery, my works include intricate glass mosaic table tops and art furniture, tableware, stained glass windows and panels, tiles, lamps and other forms of glassware. My work is available in several select gallery shops as well as by commission (please contact me for further information).

I live in western Canada in a light-filled log house on untamed land regularly visited by all sorts of wildlife. An avid interest in native Canadian legends and art permeate my work. I take meticulous care in creating arresting designs, and spend many hours selecting the glass for each piece—the colours must be strong and alive, they must elicit light, and they must glow and sing so that one cannot help but be drawn to them.

Every piece I make—whether jewellery or tabletop, window or bowl—is unique. Each is made one at a time with its own special combination of colours. Each is a limited edition of one.

I believe the things we use and live with, as well as the jewellery with which we adorn ourselves, should be wonderful to contemplate and make the heart beat faster.
